STEM Summer Intern Application for Andros Innovations

Location: Boston, MA | Type: Full-Time

The Mission: Retire The Haber-Bosch Process.

Humanity relies on the Haber-Bosch process to feed 4 billion people, but it consumes ~1% of the world's energy and spews gigatons of carbon dioxide. At Andros, we are building the reactor to end this dependency. We are developing a decentralized, low-pressure ammonia synthesis platform to decarbonize the future of food and fuel. We are looking for STEM interns that want to contribute to solving hard technical problems. Whether you are a chemist synthesizing novel materials or an engineer building a chemical skid, you will contribute directly to retiring the fossil-fuel era.

The Role

You will be embedded directly into our R&D team. You will not be "shadowing"; you will be working. Depending on your background (Chemistry vs. Engineering), you will be assigned a core project that advances our technology readiness level (TRL).

What you will actually do:

  • Track A: The Scientist (Chemistry / Materials Science)

    • Catalyst Synthesis: You will synthesize proprietary catalyst batches, moving from gram-scale discovery to kilogram-scale scale-up.

    • Characterization: You will use XRD, BET, and Chemisorption to characterize fresh and spent materials, analyzing how synthesis parameters affect reactor performance.

    • Data Analysis: You will take raw kinetic data and model reaction rates, helping the team understand the mechanism of our catalyst.

  • Track B: The Builder (Chemical / Mechanical Engineering)

    • Hardware Design: You will model reactor components and test fixtures in SolidWorks. You will create drawings and work with machine shops to get parts made.

    • Build & Assemble: You will get your hands dirty building pilot skids. You will bend tubing, install Swagelok fittings, and wire sensors.

    • Reactor Operations: You will operate our automated test rigs, managing pressure, temperature, and flow to validate system performance.

  • For All Tracks:

    • Safety First: You will learn how to operate safely in a chemical environment. You will participate in HAZOPs and safety reviews for hazardous gas handling.

    • Real Data: You will present your findings in weekly technical reviews. Your data will decide the next step in our roadmap.

Must-Haves:

  • Currently enrolled in a BS, MS, or PhD program in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or Materials Science.

  • Lab/Shop Experience: You have spent time in a research lab, a machine shop, or a Formula SAE/Rocketry team. You know the difference between a wrench and a ratchet, or a beaker and a flask.

  • Data Fluency: You don't just use Excel. You are comfortable with Python, MATLAB, or JMP to analyze your data.

  • The "Fix It" Mindset: You are resourceful. If an experiment fails, you don't stop; you figure out why and try again.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Experience with catalysts, reactors and reaction engineering.

  • Built something cool.

  • Familiarity with Python for data visualization.

Why Andros?

  • Solve a Century-Defining Challenge: You will be working on one of the most significant hurdles in modern thermodynamics: breaking the nitrogen triple bond efficiently. This is not incremental optimization; it is a fundamental shift in how the world produces energy and food. Your work will directly contribute to decarbonizing gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions.

  • The Deep Tech Frontier: You will be working at the cutting edge of chemical manufacturing and systems engineering. We are deploying novel hardware systems that move beyond standard industry practices. You will have access to the resources and tooling required to bridge the gap between theoretical chemistry and industrial application.

  • Mission-Driven Velocity: We operate with the urgency that the climate crisis demands. You will join a lean, high-caliber team where iteration cycles are measured in days, not quarters. We value rapid hypothesis testing, data-driven decisions, and scientific rigor.
