Senior Systems Engineer Application for Andros Innovations

Location: Boston, MA | Type: Full-Time

The Mission: Retire The Haber-Bosch Process.

Humanity relies on the Haber-Bosch process to feed 4 billion people, but it consumes ~1% of the world's energy and spews gigatons of carbon dioxide. At Andros, we are building the reactor to end this dependency. We are developing a decentralized, low-pressure ammonia synthesis platform to decarbonize the future of food and fuel. We need a Senior Systems Engineer to take our core technology and wrap it in a robust, industrial-grade plant. You will bridge the gap between lab experiment and chemical skid.

The Role

You will stand at the intersection of Mechanical Design, Process Engineering, and Control Systems. You will not just draw P&IDs; you will turn them into steel. You will be responsible for the "Balance of Plant" (BoP) integrating our novel reactor with the thermal management, gas compression, and safety systems required to run autonomously in the field.

What you will actually do:

  • Architect the System: Own the Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs). You will define mass and energy balances to ensure the system runs efficiently.

  • Balance of Plant (BoP) Selection: Select, size, and source critical components: compressors, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and sensors. You know the difference between a ball valve and a needle valve, and when to use which.

  • Skid Design & Build: Lead the mechanical design of our pilot skids in SolidWorks. You will oversee the fabrication and assembly, ensuring the physical hardware matches the digital twin.

  • Thermal & Fluid Management: Design the cooling and heating loops required to maintain precise reactor temperatures. You will model fluid dynamics to minimize pressure drops.

  • Controls Integration: Work with electrical engineers to define control logic. You understand how to translate process requirements into PLC functional specifications.

  • Safety Leadership: Lead HAZOP and LOPA reviews. You will ensure our systems comply with ASME B31.3 piping codes and ammonia safety standards.

Must-Haves:

  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Systems Engineering (with 5+ years of hardware experience).

  • Fluid & Thermal Fluency: Deep understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics in compressible gas systems.

  • CAD & Documentation: Expert in SolidWorks (or equivalent) and maintaining revision-controlled P&IDs.

  • The "Builder" Mindset: You have built complex electromechanical systems from scratch. You don't call a technician when a fitting leaks; you grab a wrench and fix it.

  • Standards Awareness: Familiarity with industrial standards (ASME, ISO, NEC) and safety protocols for pressurized systems.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Experience with Ammonia, Hydrogen, or other hazardous gas systems.

  • Experience with PLC programming (Siemens/Allen-Bradley) or LabVIEW.

  • Background in scaling hardware from TRL 4 (Lab) to TRL 7 (Field Pilot).

Why Andros?

  • Solve a Century-Defining Challenge: You will be working on one of the most significant hurdles in modern thermodynamics: breaking the nitrogen triple bond efficiently. This is not incremental optimization; it is a fundamental shift in how the world produces energy and food. Your work will directly contribute to decarbonizing gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions.

  • Technical Ownership & Autonomy: As a senior technical leader, you will not just execute a roadmap; you will define it. You will have the authority to make critical engineering decisions, from equipment selection to system design, without the administrative bottlenecks found in large chemical conglomerates.

  • The Deep Tech Frontier: You will be working at the cutting edge of chemical manufacturing and systems engineering. We are deploying novel hardware systems that move beyond standard industry practices. You will have access to the resources and tooling required to bridge the gap between theoretical chemistry and industrial application.

  • Mission-Driven Velocity: We operate with the urgency that the climate crisis demands. You will join a lean, high-caliber team where iteration cycles are measured in days, not quarters. We value rapid hypothesis testing, data-driven decisions, and scientific rigor.

  • Meaningful Equity: We believe that the engineers building the future should share in the value they create. As a key early member of the technical team, you will receive a competitive equity package that aligns your long-term incentives with the company’s success.
